FOR JUNK REMOVAL BUSINESSES
Junk Removal Cost: How to Build a Profitable Quote
Start with total crew-hours and the vehicle run, then add the expected disposal cost and other direct expenses. Load size is useful for estimating capacity, but access, material density and tipping fees can change the economics quickly.
What drives junk removal cost?
Crew-hours
Count loading, carrying, dismantling, sorting, travel, unloading and site clean-up for every crew member.
Vehicle cost and capacity
Fuel, mileage, vehicle wear and usable load capacity affect how much revenue each run must produce.
Disposal and tipping fees
Different materials and facilities can produce very different disposal costs. Estimate them explicitly rather than hiding them in margin.
Load size and density
Volume matters, but dense materials can hit weight limits before the vehicle looks full.
Access and handling
Stairs, long carries, lifts, restricted parking and dismantling can add substantial labour.
A practical junk removal pricing model
- Estimate total crew person-hours.
- Add vehicle running cost for the full route.
- Estimate tipping, recycling or disposal cost.
- Add equipment, PPE and other direct job costs.
- Allocate fixed overhead.
- Apply a minimum charge to protect small pickups.
- Include payment fees and a measured contingency for disposal uncertainty.
- Apply target retained margin.
- Add tax separately where required.
Common mistakes
- Pricing by visual volume without checking disposal weight or material type.
- Ignoring the return journey and unloading time.
- Counting elapsed time instead of total person-hours.
- Failing to protect small pickups with a minimum charge.
- Absorbing uncertain disposal fees inside profit.
Use completed loads to improve estimates
Record crew time, disposal cost, load fraction and route distance on completed jobs. Over time, this gives the business evidence for more accurate half-load, full-load and specialist-material pricing.
