Pooper Scooper Service Cost: Pricing a Route Profitably

Frequency, garden size, number of dogs, route location and waste volume all affect service time. The strongest pricing model treats each stop as part of a route and measures both on-site productivity and the gaps between customers.

Route economics determine the real hourly return

A nominal 15-minute stop can consume far more business capacity once driving, parking, access, bagging and disposal are included. Measure the full route day rather than judging profitability from the garden time alone.

Key cost drivers

Visit frequency

Weekly customers usually produce a more predictable workload than sporadic clean-ups. Less frequent service can create more waste and longer visits.

Property and dog count

Larger areas and multiple dogs increase search time, waste volume and bag use. Build those factors into the service tier rather than relying on one universal visit price.

Travel density

The fewer unpaid minutes between stops, the more paid work fits into the day. Use actual route records before offering density-based discounts.

Disposal and hygiene

Bags, liners, sanitation and lawful disposal are direct costs. Track them even if customers never see them itemised.

Overhead

Scheduling software, insurance, phone, accounting, marketing and vehicle fixed costs need recovery across the number of paid visits the route can realistically support.

Build the route price

  1. Estimate average on-site time by service tier.
  2. Add average drive time between stops.
  3. Add consumables and disposal.
  4. Add vehicle cost.
  5. Allocate monthly overhead across realistic paid visits.
  6. Add payment fees and contingency where appropriate.
  7. Apply retained margin.
  8. Review actual route performance monthly and update assumptions.

Common route-pricing mistakes

  • Assuming every stop takes the same time.
  • Ignoring the drive between customers.
  • Discounting recurring work before route density is proven.
  • Using one price for weekly maintenance and one-off clean-ups.
  • Forgetting payment fees, sanitation and disposal.
