5 short sections
01Country & taxChoose the currency and your tax treatment.
Currency changes labels only. Re-enter local costs; no exchange-rate conversion.
Select Yes only when you should collect tax on this sale.
Editable reference rate. Zero can also be a valid taxable rate.
Use VAT, GST, HST or your local tax name.

Enter costs excluding tax you can recover. Include tax you cannot recover. Registration alone does not determine recoverability.

02The dog & appointmentSize, coat, service and the time the job needs.
Use your own size bands. Coat and handling can matter more than weight.

Replaces base time, coat time, products, wear and minimum below. Other inputs stay as entered. These are editable planning examples, never market-price recommendations.

Bathing, drying and finishing. Use total person-minutes if two groomers work.
Additional time only. Do not count it again in base time.
Allow for breaks or additional safe handling.
Add only if not already included in base time.
03Labour & grooming costsPay for your time and everything used per groom.
Include a realistic cost for your own time, even if you do not draw a wage.
Your actual employer taxes, pension and related on-costs. Example only.
Normally 1.00. Optional workbook-compatible adjustment; avoid charging twice for time already entered.
Product cost after dilution, based on actual usage.
Enter zero if not used.
Ear cleaner, wipes, finishing spray, bows or other products.
Sharpening, clipper maintenance and equipment replacement per groom.
Per-groom usage; exclude anything counted in overhead.

Product cost per groom = pack cost ÷ usable grooms. For a diluted product, measure concentrate used rather than the volume of mixed solution.

04Overhead & travelAllocate the salon costs. Include mobile travel if needed.
Rent, insurance, software, admin and other fixed costs. Exclude costs entered elsewhere.
Use realistic completed, paid jobs, not your maximum booking capacity.
Mobile adds travel time and vehicle cost. Salon mode excludes both.

Overhead per job = monthly fixed overhead ÷ expected paid appointments. Do not count the same lost bookings again in the contingency below.

05Fees & profit targetSet a floor and protect the margin you want.
Combined percentage fee on the selected basis. Check your provider contract.
Combined fixed fee per appointment.
Share of pre-tax revenue reserved for leakage. This is not a predicted no-show probability.
Share of pre-tax revenue left after direct costs, overhead, payment fees and contingency. Gross margin is shown separately.
Your floor for this service. Tax is added afterwards if enabled.

40% margin means 40 out of every 100 in pre-tax revenue remains after the relevant costs. Adding 40% to cost is only a 28.6% margin.

A LITTLE CLARITY

Your pricing questions,
answered.

How much should I charge for a dog groom?

Start with your own labour cost and expected time, then add products, equipment wear, utilities, overhead and fees. This calculator finds the price needed for your chosen margin and minimum. It does not claim to know the going rate in your town. Check the result against your service, demand and customer expectations.

How do size, coat and matting affect the price?

They help choose an example appointment. Press “Apply example for this groom” to load its time and product assumptions, then edit them after assessing the dog. There is no hidden size or coat surcharge. Additional handling and coat work are priced through the extra minutes you enter.

Is margin the same as markup?

No. If a job costs 60 and sells for 100 before tax, margin is 40%, while markup is 66.7%. A 40% markup on 60 produces a price of 84, which is a 28.6% margin. The pricing engine divides costs by the revenue share left after your target, contingency and percentage fees.

Why are there two profit figures?

Gross profit is pre-tax revenue less direct grooming costs, including labour. Profit after overhead, fees and reserve also deducts allocated overhead, payment charges and the contingency allowance. The target is conservatively protected in this latter figure. Neither figure is take-home pay: income or corporation tax, financing and any omitted costs remain outside this model.

Should I add VAT, GST or sales tax?

Only if required for your business and this sale. The country profile supplies an editable reference rate, but tax starts switched off. Canada requires a province choice; separate PST/QST may also apply. US rates are manual. The tool cannot determine registration, exemptions or local taxability.

How does mobile grooming work?

Select Mobile grooming and enter allocated travel distance, cost per kilometre and travel minutes. Travel labour uses the wage plus employer burden. Avoid counting the same fuel, van costs or time again in overhead or base time.

Does a 3% allowance mean I can afford 3% no-shows?

No. It reserves 3% of pre-tax revenue for expected losses or rework. Use your records to set it. Lowering expected paid appointments already increases overhead recovery, so avoid double-counting the same losses.

Can I save or export my estimate?

Save settings keeps them in this browser on this device. Download estimate creates a JSON record of inputs and results for your own records. Neither sends the values to a server. Shared devices may expose saved settings, so use Clear saved settings when needed.

Are the examples local prices or guaranteed profits?

No. Prices, durations, payroll burden and consumable costs are editable examples. Changing currency does not convert them or load local market rates. Results depend on your inputs and are planning estimates, not a guarantee of demand or profit.
